Italy: Pros and Cons of Visiting in Winter

The Amalfi Coast in January (or February) seduces millions of visitors annually with its stunning coastal views, picturesque towns, and rich cultural heritage. This is one of Europe’s most gorgeous things to see and you can easily get here from Rome or Naples.

Italy’s peak tourist season is in the summer months but I only visit my favorite country in the Winter. Why?

Because there are no crowds or lines to stand in! You can buy gelato in Sorrento and not have to wait an eternity for your first sensuous lick.

Amalfi Coast in January or February:

  1. You enjoy more affordable prices for lodging, transportation, and activities along the Amalfi Coast. Hotels and vacation rentals often give discounted rates during this time.
  2. Authentic Local Experience: With fewer tourists around, you have the best chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and experience everyday life along the Amalfi Coast.
  3. Engage in conversations with locals and gain a deeper understanding of the region’s history, food, wine, and traditions. I had wonderful conversations with hotel staff, restaurant and business owners.
  4. Mild Climate: Despite being winter, the Amalfi Coast enjoys a relatively mild climate compared to many other parts of Europe. The temperatures usually range from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit)
  5. Amalfi Coast is comfortable in the Winter for outdoor activities such as hiking, sightseeing, and exploring the coastal towns. The weather might be cooler, but it can be refreshing and pleasant for those who prefer milder temperatures.
  6. You’ll be told it’s cold on the Amalfi Coast in Winter but don’t listen, this is always said by people who have never visited in Winter. All photos here were captured in January and February by me in the last few years.

Now let’s get to the Cons:

  1. One of the main drawbacks is reduced availability of some services. Attractions, museums, and restaurants might close or have limited opening hours during the offseason. Boat tours and water-based activities are also less likely to operate during this time.
  2. It’s crucial to plan ahead to ensure that your desired activities will be accessible during your visit. I discovered the ferry doesn’t run as often or at all from specific ports but you can still get to Capri from Sorrento daily unless there is a surge of waves and bad weather which brings me to…
  3. Unpredictable Weather: the climate is generally mild but you might encounter rainy or cloudy days. Pack appropriate clothing and check the weather forecast in the morning of each day on your trip.
  4. Limited Transportation Options: Public transportation schedules are reduced during the winter season, so getting around the Amalfi Coast can be more challenging. But taking the local bus along the coast gives you an elevated view of it and you don’t have to drive through rock face and risk being thrown in the Sea.
  5. So plan your itinerary accordingly. Just find out the timings of busses and ferries the day before. But don’t rent a car because driving along the narrow road and winding hairpin curves can be scary, especially during adverse weather conditions.
  6. Some restaurants are closed but I found one that was open when tourists want to eat at 6PM. It was incredible food.

This is why I lead my photography workshops to the Amalfi Coast in January or February.

No crowds and so much beauty to gorge yourself on with no repercussions.
