Food Porn in Mexico: Tips

Suddenly you’re in the heart of Oaxaca City eating yummy food!

And even if you don’t know what it is, it doesn’t matter, it tastes incredible.

So we had our first dinner at Origen with the wonderful ladies who came from USA for my photography workshop.

Thank you for the celebration in my favorite city in Mexico.

Why?

Food, photography, stunning architecture, and fun. You’ll eat well here from street food to fancy restaurants, this town has it all!

You simply can’t go wrong. And I’m here to show you the way to delicious food at every meal.

Yes you can eat at the public markets, get a quick taco on the street, go to a local mom and pop place or a fancy sit-down dinner in sumptuous ambiance reveling in gustatory pleasure.

Little known fact: before opening my photography business in Palo Alto California in 1985 I was a bonafide chef in restaurants in New York and Florida. I started out as a dishwasher and worked my way up.

So I know what goes into making delicious food and the challenge of creating it in a commercial kitchen.

Los Danzantes Restaurant in Oaxaca City serves the best shrimp tlayudas I’ve ever eaten in the photo above.

Get there early as they are well known for their original food and high quality entrees. They have delicious mezcal, cocktails, and wine too.

And now for the best gazpacho I’ve ever had in my life: at Espadin in Puerto Escondido.

Each velvety bite was smooth and slid down my throat with ease and ecstasy. It’s not easy to make gazpacho and have it turn out perfectly like this one.

I was happy to taste the delicate flavors and also get a sea view.

And a lime frappe: a cool way to recover from the long hot walk to this restaurant. I just had to go in the middle of the day!

One thing to be prepared for is a lack of air conditioning in Puerto Escondido so do drink plenty of icy beverages to cool off.

Well what about breakfast?

I’ve got some surprises of culinary excellence for you.

This treat I discovered while searching for decent wifi in Oaxaca City. I found it at Ama Terazza, a rooftop wine bar and they also open early for breakfast where I got this delicious plate of yummy.

You never know where you’ll find your next amazing meal so you just have to be open and curious.

Here in Puebla, Mexico where I am now I discovered a breakfast place that I’ve eaten at 3 days in a row. Why?

Bacon.

Cafe y Tocino has smoked bacon with their fried eggs. I’d given up hope of finding any in this country. But here it is.

And hidden under the eggs is a surprise. French Fries with a garlic dipping sauce. You won’t remember what catsup tastes like or care after eating it.

The inside of the cafe is inviting with whimsical art on the walls and tables spaced so you can talk without yelling. It’s my favorite breakfast place in Puebla, open only until 3PM.

And I’m happy to say I even found scrumptious Sicilian pizza in Oaxaca City.

I was missing Sicily so one night I took a chance and hot footed it to Sicilia Pizza y Pasta. I never eat Sicilian food outside of Sicily unless one of my relatives is making it.

I’m half Sicilian, my Grandfather was born on Sicily so I don’t mess around when it comes to pizza or any Italian food.

I was shocked.

It was a thin crust with just the perfect amount of cheese and presented like they do in Italy. You’re brought the entire pizza on a personal plate as they know you’ll eat the whole thing.

I didn’t but seriously thought about it. Instead I brought the last 3 pieces or was it only 2 home with me and had it for breakfast.
